Schizoid personality disorder (SPD) is defined as a personality disorder characterized by long-term emotional coldness, indifference to praise, criticism, or the feelings of others, and an inability to form close friendships with more than one or two people. The environmental influences greatly affects individuals with schizophrenia and increases the likelihood of schizophrenia symptons. An example of this would be the affect from a mother when she is ill during her pregnancy or an unpleasant childhood. Individuals with this disorder prefer to be alone, thus the individual would end up choosing solitary activities. This causes difficulty for the individual to have close relationships with people. Schizoid's often dislike being touched and having sensory experiences . For example, a schizoid will get nervous when walking through a crowd and will move as slowly and carefully as possible to avoid getting touched by the crowd, but when the schizoid is being touched, even if it's unintentionally, they could have abnormal reactions such as screaming . Schizoid personality disorder can often be observed in children. These children often grow up to be very isolated and have very few friends. Many Schzoid's do not seek clinical help simply because they are not bothered to. They personally do not think that they are "sick" and are not bothered by their symptons. This particular disorder affects less than 1% of the United States and happens to appear more with males than females.

Hopefully scientists and researches will be able to figure out how genetics cause SPD, then discover a way to prevent this disorder. Although people can get this disorder due to a horrible childhood, knowing how to prevent people from inheriting this disorder is alwasy an advantage.
